Alessandro Manzoni was an Italian writer, poet and playwright.
Considered one of the greatest Italian novelists of all time for his famous novel The Betrothed, the cornerstone of Italian literature, Manzoni had the principal merit of having laid the foundations for the modern novel and of having thus sponsored the Italian linguistic unity, in the wake of that morally and civilly committed literature proper to the Italian Enlightenment.
