5 euro silver coin dedicated to the 850th anniversary of the Battle of Legnano, BU.
The Battle of Legnano was fought between the imperial army of Frederick Barbarossa and the troops of the Lombard League on May 29, 1176, between the towns of Legnano and Borsano, in the Upper Milanese region, in present-day Lombardy. Although both sides were already aware of the enemy’s presence in the area, they encountered each other suddenly, without having time to plan any strategy.
The clash was crucial in the long war waged by the Holy Roman Empire in an attempt to assert its power over the communes of northern Italy.
