2 euro commemorative coin dedicated to the 550th anniversary of the death of Filippo Lippi, Brilliant Uncirculated.
Fra Filippo di Tommaso Lippi was an Italian painter. After an initial period, of strict Masaccesca adherence, though enriched with ideas taken from real life, as in the contemporary works of Donatello and Luca della Robbia, Lippi gradually moved towards a wider spectrum of influences, which also included Flemish painting. In 1424 he witnessed the decoration, by Masolino da Panicale and Masaccio, of the Brancacci chapel, which played a fundamental role in his artistic vocation. The obverse of the coin depicts the Virgin Mary intent on contemplating Jesus stretching out his arms towards her, a detail taken from the famous altarpiece of the "Madonna with the Child and two angels", painted around 1460-1465 and kept at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Thanks to the extraordinary spontaneity of the representation and to the profound humanity, the work immediately had great success and was the source of infinite variations for many artists, including Botticelli, a painter's pupil.
