2 euro coin dedicated to the Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam, UNC. Between 1745 and 1747 Frederick II the Great, king of Prussia, had a small rococo-style summer residence erected, based on sketches he designed himself. In 1841 the building was enlarged. In 1990 the castles and gardens of Sanssouci park were included in the list of world heritage sites by UNESCO. According to the description made by the German Commission for UNESCO, "the castle and park of Sanssouci, often referred to as the Prussian Versailles, are a synthesis of the artistic trends of the eighteenth century in European cities and courts". The location of the Sanssouci palace on a hill planted with vineyards reflects an ideal of harmony between man and nature, in a landscape ordered by human intervention.
