Composed in less than three months, in 1831, it was given its world premiere at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on December 26 of the same year, inaugurating the Carnival and Lent season of 1832. The subject is set in Gaul at the time of ancient Rome, and presents clear links, even if not explicit, with the myth of Medea. Faithful to this idea of ​​classical sobriety, Bellini adopted a particularly homogeneous orchestral tone for Norma, relegating the orchestra to the role of accompanying the voice.
