L’Aquila is the Italian Capital of Culture for 2026. It is the capital of Abruzzo, located in the heart of the Apennines and surrounded by mountains such as the Gran Sasso. It is a city rich in history, art and culture, founded in the 13th century. Among its most important monuments are the Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio, the Basilica of San Bernardino, the Spanish Fortress and the famous Fountain of the 99 Spouts. In 2009, the city was hit by a strong earthquake, but it has continued to rebuild and preserve its important historical and artistic heritage.
