Iconic species of the Australian continent, the koala is an arboreal marsupial closely linked to forests with a prevalence of eucalyptus, whose leaves are almost its only source of nutrition.
Today, the main threat to the koala is climate change, which is responsible, among other things, for the increase in drought periods, resulting in fires that are longer, more frequent and more devastating than in the past. It is precisely because of the perpetuation of the fires, which lasted 9 months, that in 2019 and 2020 more than 60,000 koalas died and almost 19 million hectares of forests burned. Koalas are highly specialized animals and cannot adapt to such sudden changes.
