The Ávila Wall is a Romanesque military fence that surrounds the old city of the Spanish city of Ávila, in the autonomous community of Castilla y León. The wall was declared a World Heritage Site in 1985. Its importance derives from being the best preserved medieval walled enclosure in Spain and probably throughout Europe. The walls are a very important active factor in shaping urban planning in the city and historically have participated in the distribution of urban space among the various social groups that have inhabited Ávila. The military character of the wall is mainly defensive and was maintained with the reforms implemented in the 14th century, which strengthened it.
