In Andorra, transhumance is an ancient pastoral practice deeply rooted in the country's identity, officially inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Every year, at the beginning of summer (usually around June or July), herds of Andorran brown cows, horses, and flocks of sheep leave the valley villages to climb toward the rich, high-altitude pastures (subalpine areas and high mountain meadows). They remain there throughout the warm season before descending back to the stables in autumn, ahead of the arrival of the harsh Pyrenean winter. Transhumance is celebrated locally with dedicated festivals. Today, these traditional paths have become famous nature trekking routes, such as the renowned Camí de la Transhumància.
