2 Euro - Tiziano - San Marino - 2026 - BU
2 euro commemorative coin dedicated to the 450th anniversary of the death of Titian Vecellio, Brilliant Uncirculated.
Also known as “the Divine” by his contemporaries, Titian dominated Venetian painting and, in fact, the entire European art scene for nearly seventy years. Born in Cadore, he moved to Venice at a very young age, where he learned the art of color and vibrant chromaticism, first under the Bellinis and then working alongside Giorgione, whose artistic legacy he carried on.
His long and extraordinary career saw him become a true “court painter” on an international level, working for the greatest rulers and most powerful figures of his time. He served as the official portraitist to Charles V and Philip II of Spain, achieving honors and wealth that very few artists had attained before him. His canvases, ranging from psychologically intense portraits to mythological and religious themes, stand as a testament to his compositional genius and revolutionary use of color, which foreshadowed modern painting techniques.
His death, which occurred in Venice on August 27, 1576, during the great plague epidemic, marked the end of an era. Despite the scourge, Titian was honored with a burial in the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, a rare privilege for victims of the plague.
