Selonia, known in Latvian as Sēlija, is one of Latvia’s lesser-known yet historically and culturally distinctive regions. Today, Selonia retains a deeply rural and traditional character. The landscape is gently hilly, shaped by glaciers, and dotted with small farms, old manors, and forests. Local communities maintain a strong sense of identity through crafts, folk traditions, and regional pride. The region also plays an important role in modern Latvia’s strategic development: a large new military training area (the Selonia Training Area) is being built there to strengthen the country’s defence infrastructure.
