The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Meritxell is located in Meritxell, within the parish of Canillo in the Principality of Andorra. Our Lady of Meritxell is considered the patron saint of the nation. The sanctuary is part of the Ruta Mariana (Marian Route), a pilgrimage itinerary connecting the sanctuaries of El Pilar, Torreciudad, Lourdes, Montserrat, and Meritxell. An initial chapel of Romanesque origin housed the ancient 12th-century wooden statue of the Virgin. On the night of September 12, 1972, a fire devastated the building, though the historical memory of the site was preserved.
The new complex features contemporary lines and a bold interplay of open spaces, cloisters, and color contrasts inspired by Romanesque, Greek, and Renaissance architecture.
