2 euro commemorative coin dedicated to the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis from Assisi.
Francis from Assisi was an Italian religious figure, mystic, and poet. Founder of the Franciscan Order, he was proclaimed a Saint by Pope Gregory IX in 1228. Inspired to lead a christian life of poverty, he became a beggar and an itinerant preacher. Francis is associated with the patronage of animals and the environment. It became customary for churches to hold animal blessing ceremonies on his feast day, October 4th.
