2 euro commemorative coin dedicated to the cliff of the German island of Rügen, UNC.
118 meters high, the cliff is part of the Stubbenkammer, the group of chalk cliffs located in the Jasmund peninsula (UNESCO World Heritage Site) in the land Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The cliff attracts over a million visitors a year.
On the origin of the name Königsstuhl there are two hypotheses. A local legend tells that the man who would have climbed the cliff to the top would have become king. Instead, the second hypothesis refers to a possible historical event: in 1719 King Charles XII of Sweden, after a naval battle against the Danes, would have rested on a chair at the foot of the cliff.
