Charlemagne was king of the Franks from 768, king of the Lombards from 774 and from 800 the first Roman Emperor, crowned by Pope Leo III in the ancient basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican.
He reigned together with his brother Carloman, whose sudden death left Charles the sole ruler of the Frankish kingdom. Through a series of successful military campaigns he expanded the Frankish kingdom to include a large part of Western Europe.
