Cornetto is the name of an ice cream cone filled with vanilla ice cream, swirled with chocolate, and topped with low-fat chocolate, chopped hazelnuts, and meringue on a wafer cone, first introduced in 1959.
The Cornetto was initially produced artisanally by the Società Partenopea Imbottigliamento e Confezione Alimenti (SPICA) in Naples. The patent was purchased in 1976 by the Anglo-Dutch multinational Unilever, which began marketing the product on an industrial scale under the Algida brand in Italy, and under its various brands abroad. The Cornetto became hugely popular, thanks in part to aggressive advertising campaigns, so much so that the term “cornetto” has become a generic name for any industrial ice cream cone of any brand, much like what has happened with other products.
