On 20 September 1870 the famous episode of the breach of Porta Pia occurred in which the bersaglieri managed to enter Rome and conquer it. In a referendum it was united with the Kingdom of Italy.
On 3 February 1871, Rome was designated the capital of the Kingdom of Italy by its citizens. The city, as a result of this change of status, undergoes important urban, architectural and functional changes.
