Michelangelo Buonarroti was born in Caprese in 1475, in the province of Arezzo, and was and died in Rome in 1564. He was a multifaceted artist: painter, sculptor, architect and also a poet.
Initiated into humanistic studies under Francesco da Urbino, Michelangelo manifested artistic tendencies early on. Encouraged by Francesco Granacci, he managed to convince his father and family and, in April 1488, entered the workshop of painters Domenico and David Ghirlandaio as an apprentice. From 1489, however, he preferred to frequent the Medici gardens of San Marco to study ancient sculptures and modern cartoons and to learn the techniques of sculpture under Bertoldo di Giovanni, a pupil and collaborator of Donatello.
