The Fountain of the Four Rivers, designed and created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, constitutes an unsurpassed Baroque creation placed in the center of one of the city's most important squares.
In the center of a low elliptical basin, the fountain is imagined as a large travertine cliff, carved from a cave with four openings, supporting the granite obelisk. On the corners of the cliff are the monumental marble statues of the four rivers representing the then known continents, also identified by the vegetation and animals carved beside them: Antonio Ercole Raggi's Danube for Europe, with a horse; Claude Poussin's Ganges for Asia, with an oar and a dragon; Giacomo Antonio Fancelli's Nile for Africa, with a veiled head (an allusion to the unknown sources) associated with a lion and a palm tree; and Francesco Baratta's Rio de la Plata for America with a raised arm-perhaps to shelter from the sun's rays represented by the obelisk-and an armadillo beside it.
On the top of the cliff are two large marble coats of arms of the pope's family with a dove carrying an olive branch in its beak, and the same dove, in bronze, is placed at the top of the obelisk.
The fountain was made between 1648 and 1651.
