The University of Naples Federico II (Unina) is an Italian state university founded in 1224, the oldest public university in the world.
Born by will of the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Sicily Frederick II of Swabia who, on 5 June 1224, sent from Syracuse a generalis lictera with which he designated the Naples city as the seat of the Studium General of the kingdom.
With over 90,000 students (2022) it is among the largest universities in Europe, long the only state university in Naples, until the establishment of the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli in 1991, formerly the Second University of Naples.
