2 euro coin dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Finland. Finland was part of the Kingdom of Sweden from the 12th century to 1809, when it became an autonomous grand duchy within the Russian Empire until the 1917 revolution. On December 6, 1917, Finland gained independence, followed in 1918 by a civil war that ended with the defeat of the pro-Bolshevik "Reds" by the pro-conservative "Whites" supported by the German Empire. After a brief attempt to establish a monarchy in the country, Finland in 1919 became a republic.
