The Louvre Museum in Paris, France, is one of the most famous museums in the world and the first in terms of visitor numbers. It is located on the rive droite, in the first arrondissement, between the Seine and rue de Rivoli.
The museum got its name from the building that houses it. Originally the museum was a fortress, built in the late 12th century during the reign of Capetian King Philip II, in later renovations it was a royal and governmental seat.
In the 1980s, President Mitterrand proposed as one of his Grandes Opérations d'Architecture et d'Urbanisme the renovation of the entire area. The project was designed by Ieoh Ming Pei and included a pyramid of glass and steel positioned in the Cour Napoléon, illuminating a large underground atrium that would serve as the new main entrance, as well as the Carrousel du Louvre, a veritable underground city with stores, bars, services, an auditorium, a large bookstore, and a hall for temporary exhibitions.
