2 euro commemorative coin dedicated to the 175th anniversary of the Frankfurt Constitution, UNC.
The constitution was drafted following the 1848 revolution by the Frankfurt National Assembly, a representative body composed of delegates from different German regions. The assembly had met with the aim of creating a constitution for a future united and democratic German state.
The principles that inspired the Frankfurt Constitution were those of German Enlightenment and idealism. The constitution guaranteed fundamental individual rights, such as freedom of speech, the press, religion and association, and established a parliamentary system with a bicameral parliament consisting of a Reichstag (House of Representatives) and a Reichsrat (Federal Council). The Constitution of Frankfurt also provided for the equality of all citizens before the law and the universal right to vote for men.
