The extraordinary Jubilee of redemption was proclaimed by Pope John Paul II through the papal bull Aperite Portas Redemptori. The opening of the Jubilee was scheduled for March 25, 1983. The choice of this date was not accidental, falling on that day the solemnity of the Lord's Annunciation; on that date the Holy Door of the Basilica of San Pietro in Vaticano was opened.
