MIXED YEARS 500 Lire silver coin dedicated to the three Caravels, UNC. The three Caravels were the three ships used by Christopher Columbus for his travels overseas. Their names are: Niña, Pinta and Santa Maria. The Santa María was the largest of the three ships used by Christopher Columbus on his first voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492 and was used as the flagship of the expedition. The real name of the Niña was Santa Clara. The name Niña was probably a playful reference to the owner's name, Juan Niño. La Pinta was the ship from which Rodrigo de Triana first sighted America.
