2 euro coin dedicated to the 600th anniversary of the discovery of Madeira Island, UNC.
Madera is an archipelago of islands of volcanic origin located in the Atlantic Ocean, 545 km north-west of the African coast, belonging to Portugal. The archipelago consists of two major islands, Madeira and Porto Santo, with three smaller uninhabited islands. The archipelago was rediscovered in 1419 by the Portuguese João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira. At the time it was uninhabited and covered by dense forests; hence the name "Ilha da Madeira" (wood island).
