The design features the Arkadi Monastery where a famous episode of the Cretan revolt against the Ottomans was played: in 1866, 943 Greeks, mostly women and children took refuge in the monastery; After three days of battle, the Cretans blew up barrels of gunpowder, choosing to sacrifice themselves rather than surrender. The episode was not conclusive for the insurgency but attracted the attention of the whole world on the Cretan situation.
