Description
Clearly visible on the coin, the Roman god of financial gain, Mercury, and Fortuna, the goddess of luck, grace the main door of the bank, which was founded on 1 June 1816, during the regency of Emperor Franz Joseph 1. The National Bank of Austria has long been the official issuer of bank notes in Austria, but during its eventful history it has also overseen the transition from the Gulden to the Crown, from the Schilling to the Reichsmark, and from the Schilling to the Euro. Today the National Bank of Austria helps shape the monetary policy of the Eurozone and safeguard price stability.
